What are the Benefits of Roof Lanterns and Skylights?

Roof lanterns and skylights from Williams Windows are an excellent addition to any home, offering numerous advantages that enhance both aesthetics and functionality. These installations flood interiors with natural light, creating bright, inviting spaces that can significantly improve mood and productivity. The increased natural light also helps reduce reliance on artificial lighting, potentially lowering energy bills. Furthermore, roof lanterns and skylights can enhance ventilation, allowing fresh air to circulate and maintaining a healthier indoor environment. They can even add a touch of elegance and modernity to your property, boosting its overall value and appeal.

All lanterns and rooflights are aluminium framed, with solar control, self-cleaning glass as standard — this keeps the roof cooler in summer and the outer pane cleaner for longer, without the cost or hassle of accessing hard-to-reach roof glazing. Lanterns carry a 1.2 W/m²K U-value as standard, with a free upgrade to 1.0 W/m²K available on request; flat rooflights come with a 1.0 W/m²K U-value as standard.

Stock sizes are made to a 5-working-day turnaround plus next-day delivery. The 1.0 U-value upgrade adds a few extra days (8–10 days total), and the Cool-Lite upgrade on flat rooflights adds a further 5–7 days.

Frequently Asked Questions about Roof Lanterns and Skylights

Welcome to our FAQ section, where we address common queries about our premium roof lanterns and skylights. Learn more about the differences, installation requirements, and benefits of choosing Williams Windows for your home improvement needs.

What is the difference between a roof lantern and a skylight?

A roof lantern is a three-dimensional structure that projects from a flat roof, providing an architectural feature and ample light. A skylight is typically a flat or domed window installed directly into the roofline, offering natural light without altering the roof's profile.

Do I need planning permission to have a roof lantern installed?

Generally, roof lanterns fall under permitted development rights, so planning permission is not required. However, it's best to check with your local planning authority as exceptions may apply, especially in listed buildings or conservation areas.

Are roof lanterns noisy when it rains?

High-quality roof lanterns, like those from Williams Windows and Doors, are designed with noise-reducing glazing, significantly minimising rain noise. The level of noise can also depend on the type of glass and installation quality.

Can you add a roof lantern to an existing roof?

Yes, roof lanterns can be retrofitted to existing roofs. Our experienced team at Williams Windows and Doors can assess your current roof structure and recommend suitable solutions to incorporate a roof lantern seamlessly.

How long does it take to fit a roof lantern?

The installation of a roof lantern typically takes between one to two days, depending on the complexity of the roof structure and the size of the lantern. Our professional team ensures efficient and high-quality installation.

What's the difference between a roof lantern and a flat rooflight?

A roof lantern is a pitched, multi-panel structure that projects above the roofline. A flat rooflight is a single flat glazed unit set at a slight pitch. Both let in natural light — the choice comes down to the look you want and the structure of your roof

    Do you offer supply only?

es — we offer both supply only and supply and fit, so we can work with your own installer or handle the full job ourselves.

Does the glass come with any special coating?

Every unit comes with solar control, self-cleaning glass as standard, with a U-value upgrade available if you want improved energy efficiency.

How long does a roof lantern take to arrive?

Stock sizes have a 5 working day turnaround plus next-day delivery. Choosing the free 1.0 U-value glass upgrade extends this to 8–10 days, and bespoke sizes will take longer — we'll confirm a lead time when we quote.
